Parksville Sandcastle Competition

Friday, August 31st, 2007

On Sunday we drove out to Parksville, which is about a 2 hour drive from Colwood, each way. We went to the Parksville Beach Festival (or Sandcastle Competition) which featured sand castles designed and created by professionals. I’m not sure what it takes to become a professional, but the sandcastles looked great! Some of the pictures that I took are below, and you can see more (and better) pictures on Dave’s post.

I honestly don’t know how the judges make their decisions on which entries win the competition, because most of them were really impressive. There were three team entries, and a bunch of single entries. Each team had a total of 23 hours over 3 days. Parksville’s Sandcastle Competition has been a tradition since 1982, and seems to be a popular event.

Some of the pictures are a bit blurry because I had my camera in manual focus mode, and I thought it was in automatic so I didn’t bother focusing. Sigh. Oh well, some of them still turned out, and the other ones I can live without.

Lunar Eclipse

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

This morning we were able to see the lunar eclipse. I took some pictures, most of them blurry as I didn’t bring my tripod with me. I also took two videos, but it was too dark so it is pretty hard to see anything.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth gets directly between the sun and the moon, blocking the light that normally reflects off the moon. This was the second lunar eclipse of 2007.

I found the video below on youtube, which is from the lunar eclipse earlier this year.

(Removed embedded video because it messed up my layout in Firefox)

Picture of the Day

Friday, February 16th, 2007

I was checking my RSS feeds in Google Reader this morning while at school, as the feeds I have in Google Reader are different then the feeds I have in GreatNews. Google suggested a few random ’sets’ of feeds, and once of them was the Photography set. While browsing through it this morning, I stumbled upon a few pictures that I liked. This may be something that I do once every few weeks, of course including more pictures then today. It is with great pleasure that I present the very first picture of the day on fewleftstanding.net!

The first picture is of the sun shining through the trees over Route 413 in Durham, Pennsylvania. The second picture is of a road somewhere in Pennsylvania after a snow flurry.

I need to figure out a better way to create thumbnails in my posts. I usually just use a calculater so I can maintain the original aspect ratio, any suggestions on how to do this more effectively?

First Post of 2007

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

I haven’t made any posts lately, but I’ve had a lot going on. This is going to be a long post, so here are the main topics in bullet form.

-Grandpa
-Xbox
-Sites Launched
-Cell Phone
-Flickr Limits

Grandpa

A few weeks ago, my mom’s dad was driving during the middle of the night. He fell asleep at the wheel, and drove into the oncoming lane and hit a semi-trailer head on. He survived, and was put into ICU in Kelowna. He has a broken hip, a few broken ribs, and some other stuff.

Xbox

The week after Christmas I was bored so I worked on my softmodded xbox a bit. To start I changed the default dashboard from evolutionX to Xbox Media Center, and uploaded a custom XBMC skin. I installed SNES and N64 emulators and some old roms including Super Mario World, Zelda: A link to the past, and Goldeneye 007. I also streamed some movies, music videos and music to my xbox using Windows Samba shares on my desktop.

Sites launched

One of my sites that I will abbrieviate simply by ‘GPTF’, has launched. I had a lot of problems with the template, but I finally compromised and got it working. The website is running CGIproxy, and I will market it on via Myspace as soon as I get hotlink protection setup in the script.

I’ve also launched three other proxy websites that I did not design, I used templates that I found online. I haven’t promoted these proxies much yet, also I may soon. They all have a custom hotlink protection script installed, so I don’t get people using my server without looking at my advertisements.

I’m getting an average of 1,000 to 2,000 hits a day on my sites, so now that I have some traffic, I need to improve my click through rate. I now have six proxy sites running, but I would like to develop some other websites so I don’t have all my eggs in one basket’.

I am currently earning between $1-3 a day with Google Adsense, although I’ve had a few $5 days.

The server that I ordered has been setup and I have transferred some of my websites over, and I will be cancelling my Hostgator account soon and transferring the rest of my domains over.

Cell phone

I was planning on purchasing a new cell phone on boxing day, however I’ve now decided that I will wait until after March 14, 2007 before switching. On that date, the mobile carriers will be required to provide wireless number portability to their customers. That means I can take my current phone number with me to another carrier when I switch. I currently use Fido as my mobile carrier, but I want to switch to a Virgin Mobile prepaid plan.

I also want to get a SkypeIn number, but they don’t have any in Canada. As soon as they get numbers in Canada, I will subcribe to both their SkypeIn and SkypeOut services. For now I am content with calling friends over Skype, PC to PC.

Flickr limits

Recently while I was uploading pictures to my flickr account, I was greeted with this notice. For now I do not think I will change to a different service, or upgrade to a pro account. I will probably upgrade to a pro account in the future, once I start taking a lot more pictures. I only upload certain pictures to my account, anyway.

Have a great year!

Site Breach

Sunday, September 4th, 2005

Lots of stuff to blog about today. First of all, today I went to Ridgefest, and I enjoyed it. There were some skate competitions, bmx tricks, some bands, etc etc. I wasn’t terribly into the music, but im not into punk/screamo much. The bands didn’t scream a ton, but there were elements of it. I did not mosh..because there were certain people there that I did not want to meet in the mosh pit. The event went awesome, I thought, for something that was made in Maple Ridge.

I have taken so many photos lately, and I do not feel like uploading them somewhere such as DeviantArt. I think I am going to examine solutions such as Coppermine Photo Gallery. I have used it in the past for a youth oriented website that I run, and I found that it works well. I will also probably upload some of my better stuff on my Flickr Account. For now I will upload everything there, so stay tuned.

One of the websites that I run was just breached. I was running Greymatter to power the news backend, which I realize now was a mistake, as they do not offer any easy updating solutions, or support. I will be moving the website over to Wordpress, which is what I use to power this website. I will probably redo the whole website, as it was designed to accommodate Greymatter. It was not anything serious from what I can tell, but I have contacted my webhost to double-check. It was probably a script run by a script kiddie. I have not yet decided whether I will leave the site as it is, or remove it. I will eventually remove it, so I have posted pictures of the breach here, here and here.

I will upload a bunch of my pictures to my flickr account, if you have flickr add me, or if you dont have it..well you should really sign up, its great! :)

Enter the cold

Monday, August 29th, 2005

This morning I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock and the pouring rain. I got up from my bed and hit the snooze button. I eventually woke up, when the alarm went off again. Anyway, I dislike the cold very much, but the fall is beautiful, and so is winter and spring. There will be soo many more places to shoot pictures, and more beautiful opportunities. I cant wait. I have some cool pictures of a construction yard I took, but i cant find my 512 mb sony memory stick. I lent my Sony DSC-P73 to my mom and sister, they went to kalamalka lake. I took my 512 stick out, and put her 256 stick in. I cant remember where i put my 512 stick. So right now im borrowing her spare 32mb stick. I hope I find it soon.

Her Sony DSC-P100 did not come with a power cord, because it was open box. It has some wierd lithium ion battery, and we would have to buy a new power cord or battery charger, both are 99$ CAD. If you can think of a better place to buy it, let me know. I have tried london drugs, radio shack, future shop.

I’m going to go “try” Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Edited. Thank you Kris for pointing out my noobish typos. :)
